When and How Much to Tip
Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the United States, tips are a significant part of service workers' income. Here are standard tipping guidelines:
- Sit-down restaurants: 18-20% is standard for good service. 15% is the minimum for adequate service, and 25%+ for exceptional service.
- Takeout orders: 10-15% is becoming standard, especially for large or complex orders. Read more about tipping on takeout.
- Delivery: 15-20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3-5 depending on distance and weather conditions.
- Coffee shops and bars: $1-2 per drink, or 15-20% if running a tab.
- Hair salons and spas: 15-20% of the service total.
- Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per night, left daily since staff rotates.
Tips for Calculating Tips
A quick mental math trick: to estimate 20%, move the decimal one place left (that gives 10%) and double it. For a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.00. For 15%, find 10% and add half of that amount.
When splitting a bill, decide upfront whether to tip on the full amount before splitting or have each person calculate their own tip. Tipping on the full bill and then dividing ensures the server receives the correct total tip, which can be short-changed when individuals round down on smaller amounts.
Pre-tax vs. post-tax tipping: technically, you should tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total after sales tax. However, tipping on the post-tax amount has become common and usually only adds a dollar or two to the tip. Either approach is acceptable.
