Everything you need to plan and execute your move. From calculating storage needs to estimating how many boxes you'll need.

Moving is one of life's most stressful events, but good planning makes all the difference. Whether you're relocating across town or across the country, the key to a smooth move starts with understanding exactly what you need: how many boxes, what size storage unit, and how to pack efficiently.

The average American moves 11.7 times in their lifetime, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Yet many people underestimate the supplies needed, leading to last-minute store runs and overspending. A 1-bedroom apartment typically requires 20-30 boxes, while a 3-bedroom house may need 60-100+ boxes of various sizes. Storage unit needs vary just as widely — a studio apartment's contents fit in a 5x5 unit, while a 4-bedroom house may require a 10x20 or larger.

Our calculators and guides below help you estimate your specific needs based on your home size, furniture inventory, and special items. Every estimate includes a recommended 10-15% buffer so you don't run short on moving day.

Quick Moving Tips

Start Early

Begin packing non-essentials 2-4 weeks before your move date. Start with seasonal items, books, and decorations you won't need before moving day.

Label Everything

Mark boxes with contents and destination room for easy unpacking. Use color-coded tape or stickers for each room to speed up the unloading process.

Heavy Items in Small Boxes

Books, tools, and canned goods go in small boxes (1.5 cu ft) to keep weight under 50 lbs. Save large boxes for lightweight items like pillows and linens.

Over-Estimate Supplies

Get 10-15% more boxes than you think you'll need. Unused boxes from hardware stores can be returned, but running out on moving day wastes valuable time.

Moving Timeline Checklist

A well-organized move follows a predictable timeline. Here's what to do and when:

  • 6-8 weeks before: Research moving companies and get at least 3 quotes. Begin decluttering each room — donate, sell, or discard items you won't take with you.
  • 4-6 weeks before: Start collecting boxes and packing supplies. Pack non-essential rooms first (guest room, storage areas, garage).
  • 2-4 weeks before: Notify your utility companies, update your address with the post office (USPS mail forwarding), and transfer or set up services at your new address.
  • 1 week before: Pack a "first night" box with essentials: bedding, toiletries, phone chargers, medications, and a change of clothes. Confirm moving company details.
  • Moving day: Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet. Check that all windows are closed, appliances are off, and keys are ready for handoff.
