Dog Food Safety

Essential guide to what foods are safe or toxic for dogs. Keep your furry friend healthy with our expert advice.

8 questions answered

Dogs metabolize foods differently than humans, and some common human foods can be seriously toxic to them. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and xylitol (a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free products) are among the most dangerous. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center receives over 400,000 calls annually related to pet poisoning.

Toxicity often depends on the dog’s size and the amount consumed. A single grape can cause kidney failure in a small dog, while a large breed might tolerate a small piece of cheese without issue. Theobromine in chocolate is dose-dependent—dark chocolate is far more dangerous than milk chocolate per ounce.

Our dog food safety guides cover specific foods with clear yes/no answers, explain the risks, and tell you exactly what to watch for if your dog has eaten something questionable. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control hotline at (888) 426-4435.
